23. Taiwan @ Taipei

One of the days we had in Taipei, we spend by walking and taking the metro around in the center of the city. These following pictures are from some of the highlights from our lovely day in Taipei city.

The National Palace Museum is the national museum of the Republic of China.

The main building has 4 floors and houses the largest and most valuable collection of Chinese artifacts and artwork in the world. The full collection consist of about 650.000 pieces, but only about 1700 pieces are on displayed at one exhibition which changes every 3 months. It will take about 100 years to see all the pieces. The collection encompasses over 8000 years of Chinese history from the Neolithic age to the late Qing Dynasty, most of the collection being high quality pieces collected by China's ancient emperors.

The exterior of the museum mimics the Forbidden City in Beijing.

One of the treasures is a jade cabbage, which was part of the dowry of Concubine Jin in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). What is amazing about the cabbage, if you ask all the Chinese tourists who were in the museum, is that it is carved from a single piece of jade that is half grey and half emerald green.

The other very famous must see artifact in the museum is this meat shaped stone. At first this stone looks like a mouth watering piece of "Tung-po meat".

We did not find the cabbage, the meat stone or the museum very spectacular.

Taipei 101  is a 106 level  and 508 meters tall tower.

When Taipei 101 was build in 2004 it was the tallest building in the world.

It still has the fastest ascending elevator speed which is 60,6 km per hour.

The main entrance to the Memorial Hall square was the first sight we saw of the plaza. Markus is again extremely happy to pose for the camera.

The National Chiang Kai-Sheck Memorial Hall was erected in memory of General Chiang Kai-sheck, former president of Taiwan. This impressive monument has a roof, designed like the " Temple Of Heaven " in Beijing.

The monument stand on the east end of Memorial Hall Square and the view from up there is very nice.

The structure is framed on the north and south side by the National Theater and the National Concert Hall.

This park is a historic site in the middle of the city.

Taipei 228 Memorial is built to remember the many civilians, who were killed by groups led by The Republic of China (government of Taiwan) starting on the 28 of February 1947 after the Japanese ruled the country.

Estimates of the deaths vary from 10.000 to 30.000 or more.

TheRenaissance-style Presidential Office Building is really impressive situated in the middle of Taipei city. It was built during the period of Japanese colonial rule (1895 - 1945) as the governor-generals office.

The view from the building is to the Peace Park and 101 Taipei.

Of course the building is guarded, but we took a picture with one of the guards.

Markus shaking hand with the president and

the vice president.

Around in Taiwan we saw many many Orchids.
